This project is the musical equivalent of a rainy Sunday afternoon spent clearing out the attic, rummaging through boxes, digging out old treasures, dusting them off and enjoying the memories they conjure up. Over the past year or so I have sometimes found myself thinking about the past and going back through old recordings and songbooks curious to see what I might find. At first it was pure sentimentality and I only expected to be slightly amused, maybe a bit embarassed or at worst, slightly horrified by what I heard and read. After all, these are songs that I wrote in a very different time and place and in some ways in a different life. I originally had no intention of ever listening to them or playing them again, but times change and while sifting through them I started to notice myself developing new feelings and perspectives on them. When I decided to re-work and re-record a few of these songs I wasn’t really sure why I as doing it, but I knew I really wanted and needed to do it and the process was actually quite therapeutic. Blame it on Neil Young, The Band, or maybe even on Leonard Cohen, but whatever the reason, I now find it very helpful and refreshing to go back a bit, play on my sense of nostalgia, remember where I came from and why I am where I am now. And when I have time I will be re-working and re-recording more of these old gems and adding them to the collection. Because even though the past is gone, it doesn’t have to be forgotten.
